چکیده

We present a framework to solve a finite-time optimal control problem for parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with diffusivity-interior actuators, which is motivated by the control of the current density profile in tokamak plasmas. The proposed approach is based on reduced order modeling (ROM) and successive optimal control computation. First we either simulate the parabolic PDE system or carry out experiments to generate data ensembles, from which we then extract the most energetic modes to obtain a reduced order model based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)method and Galerkin projection. The obtained reduced order model corresponds to a bilinear control system. Based on quasilinearization of the optimality conditions derived from Pontryagin’s maximum principle, and stated as a twoboundary value problem, wepropose an iterative scheme for suboptimal closed-loop control. We take advantage of linear synthesis methods in each iteration step to construct a sequence of controllers. The convergence of the controller sequence is proved in appropriate functional spaces. When compared with previous iterative schemes for optimal control of bilinear systems, the proposed scheme avoids repeated numerical computation of the Riccati equation and therefore reduces significantly the number of ODEs that must be solved at each iteration step. A numerical simulation study shows the effectiveness of this approach. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

POD a-posteriori error estimates for linear-quadratic optimal control problems

The main focus of this paper is on an a-posteriori analysis for the method of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) applied to optimal control problems governed by parabolic and elliptic PDEs. Based on a perturbation method it is deduced how far the suboptimal control, computed on the basis of the POD model, is from the (unknown) exact one. Numerical examples illustrate the realization of the p...

Pod A-posteriori Error Based Inexact Sqp Method for Bilinear Elliptic Optimal Control Problems

An optimal control problem governed by a bilinear elliptic equation is considered. This problem is solved by the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method in an infinite-dimensional framework. In each level of this iterative method the solution of linear-quadratic subproblem is computed by a Galerkin projection using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). Thus, an approximate (inexact) solu...

Optimality System POD for Time-Variant, Linear-Quadratic Control Problems

The optimization of processes is an omnipresent task in industry and science. In many cases those processes are characterized by partial di erential equations (PDEs), which describe how the state of a considered system can be regulated by a control. The aim is to nd a control which induces a desired state or a close approximation of it. A task of this type is called an optimal control problem. ...

Krylov-Subspace Based Model Reduction of Nonlinear Circuit Models Using Bilinear and Quadratic-Linear Approximations

We discuss Krylov-subspace based model reduction techniques for nonlinear control systems. Since reduction procedures of existent approaches like TPWL and POD methods are input dependent, models that are subject to variable excitations might not be sufficiently approximated. We will overcome this problem by generalizing Krylov-subspace methods known from linear systems to a more general class o...

Optimal control and model-order reduction of an abstract parabolic system containing a controlled bilinear form : Applied to the example of a controlled advection term in an advection-diffusion equation

In the present paper, a linear parabolic evolution equation is considered whose bilinear form is controlled from a general Banach space. The control-to-state operator and some important properties thereof are presented. For a quadratic objective function, the gradient in the control space is derived. A-posteriori error estimators are presented for a given reduced-order model (ROM) with respect ...
